What is an electronic tax service?

An electronic tax service is a set of online services provided to taxpayers. These services make communication with tax authorities easier and allow taxpayers to submit tax returns, check tax debts and carry out other tax-related procedures online.

Such tax services are connected and synchronized in real time through an electronic information system (EIS). In addition to tax services, the EIS enables data exchange between customs authorities, social protection institutions, banks and other organizations. This makes many procedures easier for individuals and businesses.

“An electronic information system (EIS) is a digital system used to collect, store, process, transfer and manage information in different areas. It automates data exchange between government institutions, businesses and individual users, making work processes more efficient.”

For electronic tax services to operate reliably, several technical, legal and organizational requirements are important. These include:

  • strong technical infrastructure, including stable and secure servers, high-speed internet connections, automated data processing and analysis systems, as well as modern security tools such as encryption and authentication systems;
  • digital identification and e-signature solutions, including electronic signatures, ASAN Imza and unique login details for each user;
  • a clear legal and regulatory framework covering electronic tax services, data protection and digital procedures;
  • integration with banking systems, electronic government services such as employment and social insurance systems, and accounting software such as 1C and SAP;
  • user education and support, including training, seminars, user-friendly interfaces and ongoing technical assistance.

When these conditions are in place, electronic tax services can operate quickly, securely and efficiently.

Main purpose of online tax services

Online tax services are designed to provide taxpayers with faster, more transparent and convenient access to tax procedures. Their main objectives include:

  • improving tax administration and simplifying procedures;
  • increasing transparency and reducing corruption and informal interactions;
  • saving time and resources by allowing taxpayers to complete procedures without visiting tax offices;
  • supporting the development of the digital economy, e-commerce and digital financial systems.

Electronic tax services are generally based on several key principles:

  • transparency – taxpayers should be able to track their transactions and access relevant information;
  • efficiency – tax services should be provided quickly and, where possible, in real time;
  • convenience and accessibility – taxpayers should be able to complete tax procedures from different locations and at convenient times;
  • integration and automation – tax systems should work together with government institutions and financial organizations;
  • security and confidentiality – taxpayer information must be protected against unauthorized access.

How does the Internet Tax Administration portal work?

The portal operates together with other electronic information systems integrated into the platform. Taxpayers can register and complete various procedures online.

To use the tax services available through the ITA, an individual or legal entity must register, obtain a TIN and create a personal account on the portal. Access to the personal account is provided through an electronic signature, such as ASAN Imza, or login credentials.

The personal account allows taxpayers to carry out several operations:

  1. Electronic submission of tax reports

Taxpayers can electronically submit VAT, profit tax, simplified tax, income tax and other tax returns. The system processes and checks the submitted information electronically.

  1. Electronic tax payments

Tax debts can be monitored through the taxpayer’s personal account. Payments can be made through online banking, electronic payment systems or bank cards.

  1. Registration of electronic invoices and contracts

Individuals and legal entities can submit electronic invoices through the system. Information related to employment contracts is also registered electronically through the relevant government systems.

  1. Tax audit and control services

Electronic systems can be used to analyze taxpayer transactions and identify possible risks. Tax authorities can also carry out certain control procedures through digital checks and electronic notifications.

More information about tax audit services is also available online.

  1. Online correspondence

Taxpayers can submit requests electronically, obtain certain certificates and update their information through online correspondence services.
